Ontario has one of the longest coastlines in North America (albeit mostly freshwater). This coastline is also very close to the centre of the continent. This centrality combined with the many millions of people in the surrounding area make it a major industrial and commercial centre.
Both the Great Plains in the US and the Prairies of Canada are "bread baskets." They both have very similar geography. They are regions that are flat with excellent soil, which is used to supply food to millions of people. They also have low population densities compared to regions near large bodies of water. Their climates are also continental (frequently suffering from extreme cold or extreme heat with very little moderation).
