I’m not positive, but I think I want to work in third world development. I’m starting university next year and thinking about what I want to major in; what are the best areas to major in for development work? The uni I’m looking at has a major in development, but I’m worried about limiting my options too much by doing that. I already know I want to do a language, but how about maybe international relations? political science? sociology? history? what do you think is the best?

The primary concern of all civil societies (NGOs) I worked with while in the Peace Corps was budgeting, so whatever you end up majoring in you’ll likely want a minor in finance or accounting. I’d actually recommend doing the reverse since donors and the higher-ups will be more receptive to someone with financial knowledge as a prime skill.

Sociology and history won’t really help you in the development arena. For teaching yes, development work no. International relations is just politics but it might be helpful, and political science is more concerned with domestic policy over international.

For a language if you’re thinking of Latin or South America as a work area then obviously Spanish or Portuguese. French and Russia are the main languages of Eastern Europe although German is a pretty close second. Throughout the Balkans Italian is widely used.

That you will be safe when the aliens launch the first attack? If so, do you think you should move closer to the city to avoid enslavement? Destroy large population areas to confuse the rest, as that will make them easier to control. That is the plan, isn’t it?

I live in London and the aliens are already here running things, we call them the ConDems and they live in Westminster. They are very cunning and rather than blowing the crap out of everything they are destroying the population by stealth by trying to starve and work people to death. They’re doing this by taking away benefits and keeping wages low, taxes and prices high. They’re also forcing those who have a job to work even longer so that more of them will die before they have a chance to retire. Be warned, they are slowly taking over the whole of the western world.

I am looking to change my major, and I am considering a history major, but am worried about job placement. Would anyone happen to know a website or information for best city or area for a history teacher with a decent pay grade? It really isnt about money, but like anyone, I would like to feel secure with my major, you know? Thank you for your time.

Unfortunately your major is one of the most difficult to place because there are so few vacancies.
Math and science are needed more. There are no states that are good for teaching jobs right now, and lots of placements depend on whom you know rather than what you know. Educational requirements are determined by state, so do your teacher training in the area you want to live in.
Hopefully you’ll make some contacts when you do your student teaching and you can bump up your resume by tutoring or volunteering in the area. Don’t forget to check out the private and parochial systems in the area where you choose to try your luck.

That made me think about completely change my major (from computer science) to something that would help me develop this talent. I want to do some research on the local colleges, but I don’t even know what to look for. What major should I be looking for? Marketing? Any other suggestions?

I want to major in history and then minor in a more specific area, maybe Native American studies, or the Tudors, I still don’t know. Anyways, what classes would I take in college? I want to work in a museum or historical site so what would I need to do in college and how long must I be in college? What degree would be best to get- what could I do with those degrees?

see if your university has specialization options. rather than major in overall history, and minoring in something, it gives you the opportunity to do what you described. Unfortunately, with specializations, you can’t double major, you can’t minor, and you most likely won’t be able to take other courses not needed for your degree.
