OC&G Poll: If you are a college student, what is your major/area of specialization?

Posted on February 28th, 2010 by admin in major area | 18 Comments »

I saw in a previous poll a few nights ago that many of you are students, so I was just curious.

I used to be a Political Science major

Then I switched to History :)

>> I kind of miss being a political junkie because it always shocked people. I remember guys liking that I could talk politics and I even helped on the Obama campaign and I met him once & the Congresslady representing my district in Washington! Now I don’t pay attention to any of that stuff. lol.

Need help changing my major to the right area of study?

Posted on February 14th, 2010 by admin in major area | 2 Comments »

I’m a finance major right now however my passion is for this country.

I feel like we’re at war even though we don’t have to see it here in our own country, thankfully our men in iraq are dying to prevent the resources they are using against us there/here. but that will end soon.

I want to go into the NSA and some type of survellience, i dont think i have what it takes for the CIA, academic wise right now

any suggestions?

Government agencies of all sorts recruit heavily here where I live, so I know more than one person who works or has worked for one of them. There is a specific reason why they recruit heavily here, but it’s pretty boring, so I won’t bore you with the details.

If you want to get involved, change your major to Middle Eastern Studies and double major in that and Arabic. Or, you can do the major in Middle Eastern Studies and minor in Arabic, of the other way around. The most important thing is that you end up with some degree of fluency in Arabic, and a good, solid understanding of why there are political problems in the Middle East. (You could also go with Farsi, but Arabic is more useful, simply because there are more Arabic speakers in the Middle East than there are Farsi speakers.)

Don’t sell yourself short on the CIA bit, either. They are looking for skill sets, not good grades. If you can speak an important language fluently, including reading and writing it, and you have a good understanding of the political situation in the area of the world for which you know the language, you are much more desirable to an agency like the CIA or FBI than some kid who studied history and got really good grades.

The reason I suggested Arabic should be fairly obvious, since you mentioned surveillance. There is still scads and scads of intelligence, both old, and newer stuff coming in daily, which cannot be translated for the analysts to look at because the US Government doesn’t have enough people who can translate Arabic. Right now, many of the people who do speak Arabic are up to their eyeballs in work, so there’s a real need to get more people who are able to work in that area. Another problem is that working in that type of area involves a fairly detailed background search for your security clearance. Many of the people who are volunteering are native speakers who came to the US from the Middle East, and it’s taking a long time to process their applications because it’s difficult to do a good background check on people who were born in foreign countries.

The Middle Eastern Studies bit is actually the least important part of it. Fluency in Arabic is much more important. The other stuff is good if you want to be an analyst, but if you want to do surveillance work, like listening in on phone calls or whatever, go learn Arabic. It’s a growth industry right now.

Good luck.

How can I found out list of major employers in a particular area that I never visit.?

Posted on February 9th, 2010 by admin in major area | 4 Comments »

I’m thinking about relocating in the near future. I like to get to know the major employers so I can see what job opportunites are out there & do some research before I visit. Are there any websites also that discuss jobs/careers & relocation. If anybody know please let me know. I’m still interested in gettting list of major employers.

Go to your favorite Public Library, the research department and
look into the Reference USA database. There you can get companies by SIC or NAICS code or by Zip Code etc. You can also access this information if you have a library card via the web if your library has a web site.

Good luck.

What is the best area of business to major in/go into?

Posted on January 31st, 2010 by admin in major area | 6 Comments »

Okay, so I am in my Sophomore year of college, and I am going to major in something business related: finance, accounting, management, marketing…but I am still undecided. I think I want to major in something concrete, like finance or accounting, because I hear that the pay is better starting out, but I would really like to get some peoples opinions. That’s where you come in! A note is that I want to own my own business one day.

Thanks!

There is more demand for accounting and finance jobs than for other areas. I personally don’t think accounting is interesting, and find finance fascinating. But I also understand that many people think just the opposite.

Why not take a few classes in each area and then decide what you like?

whats your major area of political study lately?

Posted on January 24th, 2010 by admin in major area | 4 Comments »

I’ve been directing myself toward looking over national supreme court cases and some of the major state level rulings

According to a recent article in the NY Times, the "Southern Strategy" that began in the Nixon era is rapidly dissipating due to higher educational levels in states like Virginia and North Carolina. This may be a template of future elections that is extremely interesting since recent GOP victories have relied so heavily on this tactic to succeed.

Music major with a minor in another area of music?

Posted on January 21st, 2010 by admin in major area | 2 Comments »

the only music minors I’ve seen are called just that: "music minor"

I want to know if its possible to major in one area of music, performance, for instance, and minor in another area, like music ed.

or is the only music minor just general music courses, like a BA in music?

The answer depends on the size of the music department at the university. Indiana University, Bloomington, which is the best general university for music in the country, offers about a dozen options or more. Most schools have no or few options.

I want to start an Internet cafe business in the major city area.?

Posted on January 17th, 2010 by admin in major area | 2 Comments »

I don’t have much money, and I dont know where to start or even think how to open a business. My most important question is LOCATION but where do I even start searching. This idea just kind of ran into my head.
This is want I think:
Upside to opening a Internet cafe : Easy to hire new employees, overhead could be minimal. Could be profitable.
Downside: Many users will have internet access at home, will it even be necessary to have a internet cafe.

How will able to start looking for a location to RENT???

Go to http://www.score.org/ to find the nearest SCORE chapter. Contact them to arrange for a free one on one meeting with a SCORE counselor about opening an internet cafe.

SCORE is a nonprofit organization. They provide a public service by offering small business advice and training. .

SCORE’s 10,500 volunteers have more than 600 business skills. Volunteers share their wisdom and lessons learned in business. The volunteers are working/retired business owners, executives and corporate leaders.

Is there any major metro area in the world anymore where English is not spoken freely?

Posted on December 31st, 2009 by admin in major area | 3 Comments »

English has become the universal language and is now spoken freely in almost every major hub anywhere in the world. However there may still be a few major markets in the world where it is difficult to find fluency in English. Does anyone know of any?

Most of the major metro areas that are not in English speaking countries.

For instance, if you were to go to Germany, you wouldn’t hear much English being "spoken freely"…you might be able to find someone who speaks enough English to help you with your problem, but it isn’t spoken freely.

Same with Russia, France, Spain, Poland, Most of Eastern Europe, much of the Middle East, Large parts of Africa and Asia, and most of South America.
