I have no personal experience of hitchhiking. But as a young driver I used to routinely pick up hitchhikers in our rural area. However, at that time (mid-late 70's) there began to be a great deal of horrendous reporting about the dangers of picking up hitchhikers. At about that time a friend was attacked by a hitchhiker he had picked up (in a different state). So I make it a rule never to pick up people hitching unless they are very young (usually I stick to females) and look like they need help. I figure better I should pick them up instead of some molester or rapist.
References :
For me, there are two reasons I don't like hitchhiking.

1/ When I see some guy standing on the side of the road with his $1,000 skis and all the rest of the gear and his $500+ annual lift ticket...looking for a FREE ride, I'm on impressed. They should try putting a co-op van together.

2/ Look up "Highway of Tears" in BC- too many young women have gone missing and are killed.
I know of a year in my area where 7 sexual assaults happened to people that hitchhiked- in less than one season.

Those are my two reasons for disliking hitch hiking.
References :
Probably because the wealthy think you should have your own car. But be careful of hitch-hiking. Here in Australia we had that serial killer who was murdering hitch-hikers. He's been caught, thankfully, but please be careful.
