Where is a good website for free maps?

I am looking for maps in unfamiliar places, and I’m having trouble understanding exactly where these cities are. Mostly, the California area’s maps are a little incomprehensible for me. Any and all map sites, or help with how to understand them better will be great. Thanks.

google earth. It may not be what you are looking for but it is defiantly worth the download.

google earth is great, but without downloading any software, I would recomend google maps.
