What are causes for a sudden weight gain in a 5 year old? The weight is only in the stomach area.?

My 5 year old is 51 inches tall and weighs roughly 60 lbs. She has a cute figure except for her belly. It seems like any additional weight gain goes straight to her stomach area. The rest of her body is in proportion to her height. She’s active in school and extracurricular activities as well. Should I be concerned?

I would definately talk to your pediatrician about it on your next visit.

  1. I would take her to a Thyroid DR. (Endocrinologist) That is what I had to do. I was the same way growing up and I a still seeing it as an adult when I do not take my meds like I should.

  2. There are a lot of chemo-physical changes going on with her at the moment, so some weight gain shouldn’t be abnormal, however if you are truly concerned talk to your doctor, only they can tell if its normal and OK with your child and how to advise you on what to do. i have heard rumor that if a child looses most baby fat by age 2 there is a higher likely hood of being obese later.
